Informatics 153

Tu-Th 2 to 3:20

General Description [top]

The objective of the course is to provide an overview of the field of computer supported cooperative work (CSCW) including related fields of social computing, computer supported cooperative healthcare, and so on.

Course Overview [top]

Informatics 153 is an undergraduate level course that focuses on the field of computer-supported cooperative work (CSCW). This class is a survey of studies of collaborative applications and system use. In this class, we will focus on the following issues as they relate to the design and use of collaborative systems: patterns of cooperation, theories of how system design affects group behavior, design principles for collaborative technologies, and specific types of functionality and their effects on collaboration.

CSCW is an interdisciplinary field, drawing on theories from fields as diverse as software, artificial intelligence, sociology, anthropology, psychology, and organizational behavior. In this course, many readings will be taken from the ACM CSCW and ECSCW conferences, which serve as archival material for the field. We will also read from other sources, including related HCI and CSCW journals and conferences.
